Episode name:
The Terror Beyond, Part 1

Description:
Solomon Grundy CRUSH Superman!

*This is season 2's episode 11, 41 overall. This series debuted in 2001.*

Solomon Grundy grabs Superman in a bend-down bearhug, then throws him backwards overhead in a back-smack to the ground. Then Grundy grabs Superman again in a reverse bearhug and holds him in a painfully strong CRUSHING Squeeze. Superman then tries to free himself by flying, lifting Grundy, up into the air.

There are only a few things wrong with this bearhug:
a) because of the stylised block-like character design by Bruce Timm, Superman's muscles and shoulders are too big & round and aren't as good when crushed by Grundy, whose arms aren't as properly positioned sometimes.
b) when Superman flies up, the scene is covered by animated clouds that constantly pass by the characters, making hard for a good screenshot.

Link 1 was the video I originally supplied, but Link 2 has the bearhug come faster *by 5 seconds* (even though the picture isn't as sharp or widescreen here).

Plot:
Doctor Fate and Aquaman rescue Solomon Grundy, intent on using him to help battle an ancient evil. Hawkgirl's atheism is shaken by Grundy's sacrifice to recover his soul, and to a lesser extent by the reliance of Wonder Woman and Aquaman on their deities when in need.
In Part 1, Solomon Grundy attacks a harbor. After the military has him contained, Aquaman arrives and steals Grundy. When the League finds out Aquaman is involved, they head to Dr. Fate to get some answers and a battle between Superman & Grundy and Wonder Woman & Aquaman ensues.

Part 2: Fate and Aquaman wanted to sacrifice Grundy to prevent the return of a mystic being. The being has arrived and Aquaman leaves to protect Atlantis. Hawkgirl finds out the being had visited her homeworld long ago.

The pairing of these heroes is an homage to the Marvel Comics superhero team The Defenders and the plot is based upon H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos.
